My name is Ryan, I've worked with some amazing dentists, and started the Best Face Forward Youtube channel in 2018 to share what I was learning in fixing my "mouth breather face", that I hated so much.

One day when I was 16, I looked in the mirror, and noticed something was "off"... When I looked at my jaw from the side, it was long and pointy.
It looked like it had changed, and honestly?
I hated it. I thought it looked dreadful. And I didn't know what it was. I later realized this was caused my mouth breathing, and poor tongue posture.

This was in high school, around the time when girls started liking me.
Or not.
Because in truth, I was super insecure. I thought no girl would ever want me, or be attracted to me. I saw my friends and their square looking, masculine jaw lines, who would "get all the girls", and I was downright frustrated, and depressed.
I would take selfies of my jaw from the side, look in the mirror and just think...
What happened? What went wrong along the way?
I was insecure, and ashamed of myself. I had low self-esteem, and self-confidence.
I didn't like what I saw in the mirror.
I knew this wasn't the jaw or face I was born to have. I was falling short, or as one person put it...
I felt Robbed of my potential
The attractive, healthy, beautiful jaw and face I was born to have. I was robbed of.
Since that day, a fire was lit in me to help myself, and the thousands of others out there struggling with jaws, and faces that are below their natural potential for beauty, health, and confidence and joy in life.
I became determined, to find some way, anyway that I could fix this problem.
I tried a lot of the things early on, including Mewing, but nothing seemed to work.
I found posture exercises, that worked really well also, and I felt the changes. But something was still missing.
When I was 26, I started experimenting with thumb pulling, and sharing this stuff online. But still - I couldn't figure out why, I didn't get the results I wanted.
It seemed like I would go a little forward, and a little back, but never make any noticeable changes.
The real breakthrough came for me at 28 years old, in March of 2024, when I visited Dr. Mona Moy, an amazing dentist out of San Francisco, California.
She worked with an appliance called "ALF", which aims to train the tongue, to learn how to function properly. (Many people think ALF is an expander, but that misses the point altogether).

Anyway, she looked at my face, and my case, and said:
"You are an extreme case, you are a downgrower. Your jaw has grown counterclockwise, it is too far back, and rotated downwards, so the mandible is steep as well".
What came next was even more shocking:
"The palatal expander you had when you were younger, actually made your jaw worse".
I learned that because the expander only made my jaw "wider", like an elastic band, it actually got stretched, and became more "flat", and "taller".
So, it actually made my jaw longer.
What I needed was forward growth. I needed to develop the maxilla outwards, and forwards, and to fix this: I was willing to do whatever it took.

1. You can change at ANY AGE:
Our sutures never fully fuse. Yes, you get faster results if you're younger, but that doesn't mean it ever stops.
This was also confirmed by world renound Osteopath, Dr. SAIFI, who I met in Paris, and said in our interview: "the facial bones are the thinnest bones in the entire body. And "absolutely yes, they can change".
2. Your tongue is the key to 3-D Facial Growth.
YOUR TONGUE IS THE NATURAL EXPANDER AND RETAINER.
You don't need appliances, or surgeries, you just need to learn how to use this expander properly.
Especially in the "pre-maxilla" which is where ALF teaches the tongue to go, every time you swallow, 1000x per day. This IS the force that can expand your maxilla out and forwards!
3. Focus on RESTING Tongue position (not Mewing)
She explained how “mewing” is using effort to try and get your body to do something it already knows how to do.
So instead of trying to hold your tongue up, she asks her patients, what’s getting in the way of your body doing what it knows how to do?

Back to the story:
In Korea, in November of 2024, I met the founder of ALF therapy, Dr. Nordstrom. I was in awe of this man. So knowledgeable, so kind-hearted...
Like nobody I had ever met. Like no dentist I had ever met, before.
He was the real deal.
And, it so happened, that I was offered, and given an ALF appliance created by the founder of ALF himself. This could be the ticket to me getting the results I know I deserved.
But I was torn.
Truth is, most people don't have access to a dentist of his skill level...

So, I turned it down. And decided not to wear it.

But - it cumulated to one of the biggest breakthroughs I've ever had, and was a pivotal moment on my journey.
I had to figure out how to get these results on my own, without the appliance.
So, I started doing hours of exercises per day (this is not necessary, but I was experimenting).
I learned how to properly do the osteopathic techniques, to expand my palate slightly every day.
I learned to address and fix imbalances in the full body, and how if you only focus on the head and neck, it will constantly relapse
And I learned how to use simple “passive training techniques” to mimic what ALF does, and teach my tongue where to go.
Yet still, my results would constantly relapse, and I started thinking, maybe I should just give up...
Maybe they were right, and I can't really change my jaw.
Until one day, it all clicked together.
I remembered Dr. Nordstrom saying that the "cheeks" and lips can "hold the maxilla back". And with one of his appliances, it actually had a "lip bumper", to STOP the lower lip from pulling the mandible backwards.
Bingo.
When he was working with me, he had his heads holding my head (something osteopaths do), and he suggested that we stretch my lower lip. So, I did as he said. And I was holding it for what felt like a year.
He said, "keep holding it". I was stretching it in a very specific way that he showed me.
It felt like an eternity.
One minute went by... then another... then another.
Finally, after I released the stretch, and laid back and closed my eyes, it was a sensation I never felt in my life. I felt my lips come together so easily, it felt like I had a new lip. I also noticed tension completely dissolving from my face. It felt amazing.
That exercise made me find the missing puzzle...
I was neglecting that one final element, which was this "myofascial release".
I put everything I'd learned together over the years, and all of the exercises "clicked", into a simple 3-part formula, with 3 "buckets" of exercises, that took me only 15 minutes to do every day.
I knew they worked, because during, and immediately after I did them, my tongue felt "different".
It was resting "differently" on my palate. With no Mewing, no conscious "effort" required.
I ended up doing them for much longer, and actually became kind of "obsessed" with them, because they felt so good.

Your tongue is constantly moulding and shaping your jaw. All of the time.
Especially the pre-maxilla, which is recessed for many people, and when they swallow, it doesn't properly brace and press up. And not when you're Mewing, but ALL the time! Every second counts.
The key is: day by day, you "level up" this underlying tongue position, so it presses more on the collapsed part of the maxilla, pushing it and expaning it outwards.
Every day, you'll FEEL your tongue pressing on your palate more evenly, and fully, especially in the front, to achieve forward growth, 3-D growth of the maxilla and mandible.

What are these exercises to improve resting tongue position, and symmetry to achieve natural facial growth, by upgrading the resting tongue position day by day, so it presses more against the pre-maxilla, correctly every time you swallow, bringing this super delicate and easily mouldable, thinnest bones in the body forward and outward, day by day?
Well, it is really quite simple, and it falls into 3 categories:
1. Osteopathic techniques (1-2 minutes per day)
- Using the thumbs to expand the small areas of the palate, especially in this pre-maxilla.
- This takes ONLY 1-2 minutes per day, at the MAX! Do not believe people only who tell you to do this every 30 minutes. This is OVERKILL. And unecessary, and can cause harm.
- These bones are extremely thin, and easily mouldable.
- If you do any more than this, it's because you're not doing it RIGHT. And MANY people do not need to do these exercises AT ALL to get results.
- So I will help you determine on a case by case basis if it's even necessary

2. POSTURE IMPROVEMENT (10-15 mins)
Full body alignment is a major key for this program. The position of your head and neck affect your tongue.
Early in my Youtube days, I gave these exercises for free online (they are no longer free), and people reported IMMEDIATE benefits.
Over the years, I've learned that the FEET, hips, and shoulders, neck, and maxilla are ALL related.
This program incorporates techniques from the FEET up to improve your posture, so it is not just isolated to the head and neck. As you do these, your tongue will AUTOMATICALLY function better on your palate, and that will make it much easier to achieve our goal, of "levlling up" this resting tongue positino so it presses more on the pre-maxilla every time you swallow, to acheive this 3-d growth we've been talking about - show what people say about this, the amaizng beenfits they feel, the Youtube comments, etc.
3. Releasing myofascial restrictions (5+ mins)
Instead of Mewing -- we do the opposite.
Asking the question, WHY is your tongue not on your palate in the first place?
The premise is this: your tongue knows what to do. Mewing is not soemthing you should have to "do". It's the natural position and function of your tongue.
SO, if it's not there, the question is WHY?
These exercises help to determine those blockages, and then release them day by day, so the tongue finds it's HOME, and gradually upgrades on a daily basis.
I have found these to be MORE effective than myofunctional therapy, and MUCH easier to do and stick to (no going to the mirror and doing exercises 3 times a day), you can do them on the couch, watching TV, or while RELAXING. Even while working! We release restrictions in your tongue, lips, cheeks, maxilla, and MORE, that are preventing your tongue from doing what it knows how to do.
After you finish them, you'll feel your tongue more NATURALLY, and EASILY pressing up on your palate.
These 3 exercise groups when combined together into a 15 minute daily routine, are extremely powerful.
They will create daily results that you can FEEL. Your tongue position will improve, and you'll feel it.
When you close your mouth, and close your eyes, and relax your face and your body, your tongue will NATURALLY be resting against, and pressing against your pre-maxilla, every time you swallow.
